As a freshman in high school, Eve Vogel had a spark of curiosity to stay behind one day and help with set design for an upcoming theatre production. Eve loved the experience, has not looked back, and is now a senior student set designer in their third year.
Eve and three other work study students are part of a set design team that works with Normandale Theatre instructors Tom Burgess and Annie Cady and set designer Chad to bring theatre performances to life through the set, costumes, props, and many other ways.
They were all very excited about what the audiences saw when the curtain opened on the 2025-26 theatre season on Thursday, October 9 with Ken Ludwig’s Sherwood: The Adventures of Robin Hood, which ran October 9-11.
Eve was excited for people to see this style of set. “The set was very different than wall to wall and box sets we use a lot in that it was like a jungle gym. Actors were constantly moving up and down, changing the way they moved around the set, and swinging on bars and ropes coming down. It was exciting for people to see of how different this set was, and how it effectively told the story.”
Tom was impressed how smoothly everything came together for a set that combined a lot of different elements. “This show was exciting to build, because I had not built a turret or rope bridge before, and we had to support everything with lightweight looking structures while still making sure everything was safe for the actors with all of the fight scene choreography. There were so many precise pieces that we put together, and everything went amazingly well during the building process. That was a testament to the students taking pride in their work and their craftsmanship. It was a fun build.”
